There are only 8 more shows scheduled (so far) on this year’s Bonnie “Prince” Billy and the Cairo Gang tour, but here’s some nice motivation to try to make it out to one of their remaining gigs. On one date this summer in Lisbon, Portugal, Will Oldham and friends performed what appears to be a particularly stunning set — based on this excellent footage, at least. In addition to a wonderfully theatrical take on “Midday” B-side “You Win” (with Oldham looking like he’s creepily staring right into the camera), Oldham sang a duet with Susanna [Wallumrod] and her Magical Orchestra of Badfinger’s classic song “Without You.” While their version is closer to Harry Nilsson’s version, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was more inspired by a certain pop singer previously covered by Bonnie: Mariah Carey.
Watch “Without You,” “You Win,” and a killer rendition of the Everly Brothers’ “The Price of Love” by Oldham, Emmett Kelly, and Trembling Bells drummer Alex Neilson in Dublin below:
