When Pete Yorn decided he “just wanted to rock out” for his next record, the Los Angeles singer-songwriter made a brilliant choice of producer/co-conspirator: Pixies frontman Frank Black, aka Black Francis. As previously reported, his follow-up to last year’s ScarJo duets LP, Break Up, and Rick Rubin-produced solo record, Back and Fourth, features Black’s knob-twiddling efforts, and I, for one, was rather curious to hear Yorn’s new, alt-rock-inspired approach. Well, the first single, “Precious Stone,” dropped last night and though I’ll hold out judgement until I hear more than just the opening track, this album feels like a welcome fresh start for Yorn so far.
