Earlier in the month, Ray LaMontagne announced details for his forthcoming self-produced album, God Willin’ & The Creek Don’t Rise — his fourth LP via RCA and first without producer/multi-instrumentalist Ethan Johns. Well, we now have our first glimpse of what Ray and the Pariah Dogs cooked up in the Massachusetts woods: “Beg Steal Or Borrow.”
Ray’s first singles (“Trouble,” “Be Here Now,” et al.) are usually my least favorite off their respective records as I’m more drawn to buried cuts, like “Burn,” “Lesson Learned,” or “Henry Really Killed Me (It’s a Shame).” This song’s groove and Joni Mitchell-esque melody, however, is sure to be a fave, making me all the more hungry for some of those understated treasures on the full-length. *Update: We now have links to 2 more songs off this record here.
