You may recall the well-known episode of South Park in which they told the story of the Book of Mormon with musical interludes of Trey Parker singing, “dum dum dum dum dum.” (If not, check out Parker and Matt Stone discussing this and other musical moments from the show with P4K earlier this week.) Well, the creators of said fictional Colorado town are now bringing the story of Joseph Smith to Broadway.
“Growing up in Colorado, a lot of our friends were Mormons and we always thought their book would make a great musical,” Parker and Stone said in a press release. “We loved Avenue Q and are having a blast working with [Avenue Q composer) Bobby Lopez. Having a show on Broadway is a dream come true for us…”
Set to premiere on Broadway in March 2011, The Book of Mormon, the musical, will be co-directed by Parker and Jason Moore (Shrek, The Musical, Jerry Springer: The Opera).
