The first time I heard The Kissaway Trail’s cover of “Philadelphia,” one of Neil Young’s most underrated songs (and a personal fave), I knew this was a band I could get behind. And on a day in which we got our first glimpse of M.I.A.’s new artistic direction, not to mention first legal listen to the National’s High Violet, I can’t think of a better way to cap the week off than with some behind-the-scenes footage/interviews with this Danish indie rock quintet that bleeds with the same level of honesty and unfettered ambition as the aforementioned artists.
Sincerity in music isn’t an easy thing to pull off without coming across as histrionic, vitriolic, or just plain ol’ emo, but the secret lies, as David Foster Wallace once said, “somewhere in the art’s heart’s purpose… With having the discipline to talk out of the part of yourself that can love instead of the part that just wants to be loved.” The Kissaway Trail members speak musically from the part of themselves that can love, IMO, which makes it even easier to love them back.
