After Paul Westerberg heard that country legend Glen Campbell performed the Replacements’ “Sadly Beautiful” on his 2008 covers record, which included songs by the Velvet Underground, Travis, and U2, he immediately got his manager on the phone: “Tell Glen I’ll be his next Jimmy Webb’,” he said. Now two years after that call was placed, it has been anounced that Westerberg penned the title track to Campbell’s forthcoming farewell album, Ghost on the Canvas.
In fact, “an unbelievable amount of people” offered their support for the “Wichita Lineman” singer’s new album of all-original songs, including Robert Pollard, Jakob Dylan, former Nine Inch Nails drummer Josh Freese, Dandy Warhols members, and ex-Prince collaborator Wendy Melvoin, Reuters reports.
Meanwhile, Campbell and company are still nailing down a record deal, as well as dates for his farewell tour.
