Not quite sure what’s more intriguing about this session posted by Daytrotter earlier today: the music itself or the story behind the jam. In short, Matt Sweeney, former Superwolf/Zwan guitarist, producer, and Rick Rubin collaborator set up an impromptu performance at Elliott Smith’s former Los Angeles studio, New Monkey, following a dinner with Andrew W.K., who was in town filming his Cartoon Network show “Destroy, Build, Destroy.” Sweeney was recording tracks nearby for the forthcoming Rick Rubin-produced Kid Rock album, and, well, it sounds like they both needed a break:
[T]hey smoke a little weed outside the back door on a crisp and clear night… They then returned to the room and what came next was a free-form explosion of Andrew’s hands pounding keys into submission and Sweeney ripping and receding, drawing from and instigating.
Johns Hopkins University should do their next musical MRI study on these guys, I say. This is your brain on Party Hard.
