Just two days following the death of J.D. Salinger at 91, news of a forthcoming documentary about the iconic writer was leaked to Deadline Hollywood. We really wanted to mention it, but with no relevant music angle, had to pass. That was, of course, until a certain ex-D Generation singer got involved…
NYC-based singer-songwriter Jesse Malin revealed to Paste that he was approached by writer/director Shane Salerno (Armageddon, AVPR: Aliens vs Predator – Requiem, Shaft) to contribute music to the film back in 2007, which has been 5 years in the making. “Suddenly I found myself rereading Catcher in the Rye. Salinger was one of the original punk-rock writers,” Malin said. “Fuck Clockwork Orange or Taxi Driver; Holden Caulfield was an outsider all the way.”
Malin ended up writing 5 songs for the film, but there is no word yet if they’ve made the final cut for the soundtrack. Meanwhile, he also revealed that an upcoming release for that Ryan Adams/Johnny T supergroup we mentioned won’t be on the way anytime soon.
