We’ve known the lineup for the latest installment in Beck’s cover album series, Record Club, for a week now (thanks to St. Vincent’s Twitter page), but the actual record that Annie Clark, Os Mutantes, and Liars put to tape remained a mystery. Until today…
Though it has yet to be posted on Beck.com, the Record Club’s cover of “Guns in the Sky,” the opening track off INXS’ 1987 classic, Kick, just hit the internets, and I, for one, did not see this coming.
After covering three albums from the late 1960s — Leonard Cohen’s debut, Songs of Leonard Cohen, The Velvet Underground and Nico, and Skip Spence’s Oar — Beck and friends have jumped ahead two decades, taking on one of the most beloved records by a seminal 80s band. (Thanks for the tip, Melissa!)
**Update: this video is available to the public once again, and Beck has offered some background info. “The record was chosen by fellow Aussie, Angus from the Liars,” he said. “It was recorded in a little over 12 hours… It was an intense, hilarious, daunting and completely fun undertaking.”
