Warren Zevon’s legacy will get a nice boost from a forthcoming feature film directed by Kevin Smith that’s based on Zevon’s tune “Hit Somebody (The Hockey Song).” MTV reports (via The Playlist) that Smith is in talks with Mitch Albom, the Oprah-endorsed author of Tuesdays With Morrie and a few sports books, for the film “about a goon, a hockey goon,” Smith told MTV’s Eric Ditzian, “who just wants to play hockey, who loves hockey so much, but just sucks at it. The only thing he can do to be on a team is just be the enforcer, just be the guy who goes out there and beats the s— out of people.”
Smith added that he has envisioned a film for the song ever since he first heard it, but now that Albom’s onboard it’s his highest priority project. Zevon’s “Hit Somebody (The Hockey Song)” certainly has enough lyrics to fuel the storyline and it should be a moving tribute to the canonized songwriter. You can listen to the song thataway.
