In a reaction to Joe Satriani’s copyright infringement lawsuit, Coldplay drummer Will Champion recently pointed out that only “the successful songs seem to be the ones that are accused of being stolen.” Frontman Chris Martin has now spoken out with a similar opinion as Champion, adding that the plagiarism claims have only inspired him to write bigger hits.
“Yeah, some people are suing us at the moment and although it was initially a bit depressing, now it’s become really inspiring,” Martin said in an interview on Coldplay’s official site. “You think, ‘Right, if everyone’s trying to take away our best song, then we’d better write 25 better ones.’ And so just at the point where I was thinking about getting fat and becoming complacent, I’ve been finding more inspiration. Now we’ve got more to prove than ever before.”
Say what you will about Coldplay, but this is some really smart damage control and marketing. Now they’ve not only used the lawsuits to praise the song in question, but Martin’s response turns the debacle into a teaser for their next record.
