Billie Joe Armstrong Talks ‘Violent’ and ‘Dirty’ Green Day Musical

As Green Day make their promo rounds, hyping their forthcoming 21st Century Breakdown, more details have leaked about the American Idiot musical that’s coming to their hometown of Berkeley, CA this fall. It’s hard to say which is harder to imagine: U2’s Spider-Man musical or Green Day’s pop punk album with choreography.

When asked what the musical will be about, singer Billie Joe Armstrong can’t really give a precise answer (they’re probably still trying to figure that out themselves), but he usually refers to acclaimed director Michael Mayer’s previous work. “When I saw [Mayer’s Spring Awakening] for the first time I was like, this is not your grandparents’ musical,” Armstrong told EW. “He’s going for it. He has a sense of anarchy in the way he approaches his craft.”

Will there be dancing? “Not ‘dancing’ dancing,” he said. “I don’t know how to really explain it. It’s got physical and violent moves. It’s not like a Lion King thing. It’s dirty and it’s got a lot of heart and it’s got a street mentality. There are no singing cats. No little girls with big curly red hair. It should be pretty cool, man.”

I’m even more confused about this thing.
