The 1982 Tommy Tutone hit “867-5309/Jenny” inspired prank calls to the owners of that phone number in likely every code in the United States. Today, however, to find someone with that actual phone number is so scarce that a person claiming to own one of the last 867-5309 phone numbers is auctioning it on Ebay. Think Tommy Tutone is no longer relevant? The current leading bid is $400,000 and there are still 5 days left in the auction.
“Selling my DJ company with the most famous phone number in HISTORY, 867-5309!” the auction reads. “This is one of the LAST remaining 867-5309 numbers in service. Receives between 8,000-10,000 Calls Per Year!! Many callers have informed me that I’m one of the only remaining 867-5309 numbers in service after attempting every area code in the US.”
Music Radar notes that it is illegal to sell a phone number, but by offering the Ebayer’s company, A Blast Entertainment Inc., a disruption of the auction can be avoided.
