While writing songs for Everything That Happens Will Happen Today, his collaborative album with Brian Eno, David Byrne came down with a bad case of writer’s block for one particular song. Eno, who was producing Coldplay’s Viva La Vida at the time, asked singer Chris Martin to help finish the song.
3 News reports Byrne said, “I think Brian gave that one to [Martin] because it took me a long time to get started. I had some of the tracks sitting on my computer for almost a year, thinking about it. I felt a little bit of a burden, that there’d be expectations.”
When Martin was given the song for his input, he promptly gave it right back without contributing. “I can’t do better than that,” he said.
