President-Elect Barack Obama has appointed the RIAA’s top lawyer to be associate attorney general. The pick, Tom Perrelli, is infamous in the realm of entertainment law, having represented the RIAA against file sharers; Perrelli has also combatted Charter Communications in the hopes of forcing them “to give up the names of 93 file-trading subscribers,” CNET reports.
If confirmed by the Senate, Perrelli would be diverted from such legal practice in order to oversee the department’s civil division, the antitrust division, and the civil rights division.
