A new career-spanning documentary about Devo is set to see the light of day after 4 years of development with participation from members of the great, uncategorizable band. Titled Are We Not Men? (from their Brian Eno-produced debut, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!), director Tony Pemberton retraces the Akron, Ohio group’s formation as a reaction (and satirical counterpoint) to early-’70s junk culture. Meanwhile, their influence on the likes of David Bowie, Kurt Cobain, and countless others gets proper treatment by way of interviews with Iggy Pop, Dave Grohl, current Devo/ex-Nine Inch Nails drummer Josh Freese, and a host of intriguing archival footage.
While the film is currently in post-production, Pemberton and Co. have launched a Kickstarter campaign (h/t Hilary) to help meet their goal of entering the project for consideration in next year’s Sundance Film Festival. Based on the trailer alone, this thing looks great. Check out the preview above.
